How to Care for Full-Grain Leather

Full-grain leather doesn't need much but the little it does need makes the difference between a piece that lasts five years and one that lasts fifty.

Here's everything you need to know, in five simple habits.

1. Let It Breathe

Store your leather goods in a dry, ventilated space never in plastic bags. Leather is a natural material; sealing it in plastic traps moisture and can cause mold or cracking over time. A soft cotton dust bag is all it needs.

2. Keep It Away From Direct Heat

Radiators, car dashboards, direct sunlight for long periods all of these dry leather out faster than normal wear ever will. Heat pulls the natural oils out of the hide, leading to stiffness and cracking.

3. Condition It, Occasionally

Every few months, a small amount of leather conditioner keeps the material supple. Apply with a soft cloth, let it absorb, then buff gently. You don't need much over-conditioning is as harmful as none at all.

4. Deal With Water Calmly

If your piece gets caught in the rain, don't panic. Let it air dry naturally, away from direct heat. Never use a hairdryer it can cause the leather to warp or crack.

5. Embrace the Patina

Small scratches, color changes, softening over time this isn't damage, it's full-grain leather doing exactly what it's meant to do. Every mark is part of the piece becoming truly yours.
